Evening: Psalm 44; Matthew 12:43-50
When you measure your virtue by the evil you avoid rather than by the good you do,
you are vulnerable to evil without realizing it. The rich ruler in the
Gospels does no wrong, but evil lingers close at hand, in his
attachment to his wealth. In the fight for right, only to shun evil is
not enough; it may even be a dangerous betrayal of those who depend on
you. Goodness is not the avoidance of evil (“I didn’t do it!”).
Positive action in service of the truth is what builds kinship and
community.
