Evening: Psalms 77, 79; Mark 9:30-41
Those
who practice religion often misunderstand it. A recent study in
England found that many who attend church are ‘heretics’ with a
distorted understanding of Christianity. One common distortion is the
notion that God needs to be appeased or satisfied in some way. So people
do religious things – fasting, circumcision, baptism – because they
think God needs them to. God needs nothing from us. It seems hard for
us to avoid a ‘commercial’ notion of faith - you do this, you get that.
But what you ‘get’ from following Jesus is the privilege of serving
others. Just that.
